3-3.5 Apparently don't start a Santino Hassell book if I have anything else to do, like sleep, or eat...or you get the picture.
I enjoy his characters so much. While I didn't find Raymond & David nearly as charming, their flaws made them equally interesting as characters. This was quite a bit different from [b:Sutphin Boulevard|25404499|Sutphin Boulevard (Five Boroughs, #1)|Santino Hassell|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1435776893s/25404499.jpg|45158379], however, because it was far more focused on the couple where Sutphin was really about Michael's journey. And generally, I don't think Ray and David were written to be as charming.
That said, I really did love Raymond. (Doesn't everyone-oh god it's late, and i'm making bad jokes). I enjoy Hassell's writing, which goes between beautiful and holy sh!t edgy for this middle-aged Midwest 30-something female. It doesn't put me off the book or anything, but it does make me blush.
The treat in this book was seeing the rough Raymond soften and be ever so tender at times. But, Hassell doesn't let his character fall into sentimentality. It just is.
And there's so many times I snort during his dialogue in particular. The books are not light, generally speaking, and this one was angsty, but I did appreciate lines
The situation was already running wild without me trying to force a declaration out of him. A wrong word or shift in semantics seemed liable to shatter an already precarious moment. "I meant it then, and I mean it now. I've never been in love with anyone before but that's what's going on, so in my opinion, you should just roll with it."
A hint of a smile danced on his lips. "Oh is that your opinion?"
"Yeah, It is. So just let me love you and stop being a punk about it." Anyway, good read. Really enjoying the author...
